The Strengthening Extractive Sector Management in Mongolia (SESMIM) project is a technical assistance project that supports the Government of Mongolia’s sustainable governance of the extractive sector and more equitable sharing of benefits for Mongolia’s current and future generations. SESMIM is a project funded by the Global Affairs Canada and implemented by Agriteam Canada Consulting Ltd., a consulting firm based in Canada. It is one of the first large-scale project to be undertaken with Canada’s aid in Mongolia and will be implemented from 2015 to 2020. The SESMIM technical team will provide leading Canadian expertise in extractive sector management with additional services and contributions from the Government of Alberta’s institutional expertise, the University of Alberta, the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy and other organizations to share leading Canadian knowledge and experience.

SESMIM provides technical and capacity building support in the areas of strategic revenue management, extractive sector governance and licensing, mine closure, environmental management, climate change, cadastre and gender to improve policy, legal environment, and support transparent and sustainable development of extractive sector governance. The project works with the Ministry of Mining and Heavy Industry, the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the Ministry of Finance and Minerals sector, the Mineral Resource and Petroleum Authority of Mongolia and the General Department of Taxation, providing capacity building support through study tours to Canada, placement programs in Canada, trainings and seminars and workshops to government and non-government organizations to introduce best Canadian practices.
